A caravan being towed by a 4WD has rolled on the Flinders Highway in Queensland.
It is understood there have been no serious injuries.
Initial reports suggest the van rolled several times during the incident, which happened near the Calcium service station south of Townsville.
A female at the scene reportedly suffered minor injuries, but did not need to be taken to hospital.
The caravan is off the road and police are waiting for a tow truck to remove it from the scene.
Emergency services are conducting traffic control.
No further details are available at this stage.
So sorry for the people involved in this accident, as well as all the others who have suffered the same fate in recent times. Has there been information collated to discover a reason for so many caravan accidents? Some possibly caused by driver error, but how many caused by circumstances beyond which the driver has no control? All too often a situation can be caused by another careless driver, such as cutting in front too soon after passing, even a strong gust of wind causing the van to sway. Having towed caravans for many years we are well aware that no matter how careful you are yourself circumstances out of your control can be the cause of a nasty frightening situation or accident.
Huge factor is speed.
Speed is impacts everything.
More speed = greater braking force required to slow down
More speed = longer braking distance
More speed = less reaction time
More speed = more violent and bigger reaction if you hit a bump
More speed = bigger crash impact
More speed = increases chance of fatality
More speed = more difficult to regain control of vehicle in a bad situation
The list is endless of how speed vastly increases the chance and severity of a crash.
How big is the list of higher speed benefits in a crash???
The difference in control you have with a vehicle at 90 or 88kph is amazing compared to 100 105 110.
A lot of people will say bah that is rubbish i.m fine at 100 103 106 that is all good and well on a nice hunky dory day but you.ll darn wish you were doing 90 or less the day things go bad. You only need 2 seconds even a split second to avoid an accident and save destroying your whole rig.
And yes you will get a tail of traffic behind you travelling a bit slower but let them pass when you can and everyone has a fine day
Thanks to the semi trailer driver (and others) who help this couple remove their van from its sidways position on the steel barrier and then remove van and vehicle from blocking both lanes of the highway on a blind bend by unhooking his trailers and reversing his cab up the highway towing the vehicle and van buck up off the bridge and out of halms way and unblocking the highway.
