Who needs fruit picking when you can drive cabs?

Published: March 6, 2013

Forget fruit picking, or helping out at caravan parks or remote cattle stations, there’s a much better way for travelling grey nomads to pick up an extra few dollars … become a taxi driver!

The head of the Taxi Council in Queensland, Benjamin Wash, believes that the job could tick a lot of boxes for casual job-seeking grey nomads.

He says anyone wishing to work as they travel could pick up casual shifts in the towns they visit.

“It is better than fruit picking,” he told the Fraser Coast Chronicle.

Hmmmm! I guess it might depend on what sort of fruit you are picking and which state you are in, and on who your ‘fares’ are and what sort of state they are in.

Having said that, the casual nature of the job might appeal to some grey nomads and it would certainly be nice to meet a few of the locals and really get to discover an area. And, as for needing to know a town before driving a taxi there … welcome to the ‘sat nav’ era!

Mr Walsh says that having drivers from a broader cross-section of the community would help improve the taxi service and encourage more people to use cabs.

He says it is important to tackle negative views on taxi driving and for it to move away from traditionally targeting full-time workers who might find it difficult to find employment in other sectors.

So, would you fancy driving a cab for a few weeks while pulled up in a town?  Do you think it would give you an interesting insight into the culture of the place you were visiting, or would it put you off it forever! And, is fruit picking really that bad?

If I ever visit a town and see a local taxi towing a caravan I’ll know why.

Oh my word!! I’ve been there and done that, and got the T shirt. trust me on this one fellow travellers, don;t go there, i did and it was the worst experience of my life. Drunks, abuse, runners, vomit, an average 12 hours shift netted approximately $80 !!
