Grey nomads will be heavily represented amongst the thousands descending on Queensland’s Scenic Rim tomorrow as 80,000 blooming sunflowers are set to put on a spectacular show.
More than 20 local farms are throwing open their gates to welcome visitors eager to enjoy the floral spectacle as part of the Scenic Rim Farm Gate Trail.
Dairy farmer and Destination Scenic Rim board member Kay Tommerup said the initiative was designed to boost tourism … and boost farmers’ morale.
“Farmers and producers can see the value in doing something like this and there is a genuine appetite for people to come out and see what’s happening on our farms,” she told the ABC. “It’s so picturesque at the moment … we’ve had rain so it looks absolutely amazing, you’ve got space and fresh air.”
Another farmer, Kalbar local Jenny Jenner, said she started growing sunflowers during relentless drought.
“We started growing a big patch of sunflowers at the beginning of the year, when we ran out of water to grow lucerne for our normal business,” she told the ABC. “So, we decided to try something a little bit different to diversify.”
And she said the response from the public had been ‘absolutely overwhelming’.
“It’s just amazing to be part of it, it brings everybody happiness,” she told the ABC. “They have a great time and they get to take home a bit of sunshine.”
