Busy campsite hit by yet another gastro outbreak

Published: November 9, 2021

A popular Queensland camping spot has once again been struck by a serous outbreak of gastroenteritis.

Inskip Point, north of the Sunshine Coast, has seen a number of similar incidents in recent years.

The Courier-Mail reports that in the latest outbreak a few weeks ago, an elderly man nearly died after becoming infected and the bug somehow got into his bloodstream. Many other campers also reportedly suffered symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhoea

The Department of Environment and Science says it has joined forces with Queensland Health to find out what caused the latest outbreak.

Campers visiting the peninsula have been urged to make personal hygiene their top priority, and to bring their own portable toilets if possible.

“Campgrounds remain open, however, we are not taking any new bookings at the two Sarawack camping areas until November 15 as a precaution,” a DES spokesperson told the Courier-Mail. “As we approach Christmas school holidays, we are taking a proactive approach and are working with Queensland Health.”

Last week, extra rangers were rostered on to provide additional campground services and advice where needed to ensure the health and wellbeing of campers already on Inskip.

“Rangers and contract cleaners have been deep cleaning the amenities at Inskip in a two-step cleaning and disinfecting process, as per Queensland Health guidelines, to help minimise the risks of viral transmission this season,” a DES spokesperson told the Courier-Mail. “Rangers are increasing the frequency of cleaning as a further precaution and amenities will have increased soap and sanitising supplies, but the best advice is for campers is to bring their own and be self-sufficient.”

At the end of last year, two camping sites at Inskip were temporarily closed to allow a deep clean of facilities following a gastro outbreak.

And, of course, the problem isn’t restricted to Inskip point. Back in 2018, a number of camping sites along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road were affected by a nasty tummy bug.
