A brand new caravan park is on the cards for the Gympie region in Queensland … a destination which seems increasingly committed to attracting more caravan and motorhome travellers.
An application has just been lodged to build a ‘tourist park and ancillary caretaker accommodation’ at Amamoor, just 15 minutes out of Gympie, off Mary Valley Link Rd and Dobson Rd.
Property Developer Alan Holliday confirmed to the Courier-Mail that the plan was to create a new camping and caravan location.
The 35.35 hectare property will offer 250 RV spots and 100 camping sites. The land is currently vacant and used for cattle grazing and, from 1980-2013, it was used for extracting sand and gravel to supply landscaping products.
The Courier-Mail says the plans for the site include four barbecue areas, an amenities building, administration building and a large 60-spot car park area. In the centre lay a large dam and the camping site is right next to the Mary River.
Mr Holliday says it could take up to 12 months to receive approval from the council.
A Gympie Regional council spokesman told the Courier-Mail that the council didn’t yet have enough information on the matter and it was too early to provide a comment at the time of publication.
The idea has been in the works since January 7, 2020, when a pre-lodgement meeting with the council first occurred.
It would appear as if the Gympie area is making a concerted effort to attract more grey nomads and other travellers.
Gympie Regional Council recently unveiled plans for six new free camping sites as part of an overarching ‘grey nomad friendly’ strategy.
And, in December last year, the council agreed to double the number of caravans, tents or cabins allowed on a private property without a development application approval.
