The dust has settled … a winner has emerged

Published: June 14, 2013

The votes have been counted. The results are in. The top three placings in the great Grey Nomads  ‘Dust, Dirt or Sand’ photo competition have been decided. After Travel Today Editor-At-Large, Steve Jones, slimmed the hundreds of magnificent entries down to a top 10, we invited you to help us choose the winners.

Polling was exceptionally heavy with a good spread of votes for all our finalists. But when the ‘dust’ settled, and the counting was verified and re-verified, the clear winner was ‘Cattle in the Yard’. Many congratulations to the photographer who will win a 24”x36” canvas print of his or her chosen photo, courtesy of Brilliant Prints.

First Place Entry

“Cattle in the Yards” … our first place winner

Cattle in the Yard is a superbly framed and executed shot which captures the mood and the moment magnificently,” said Judge Jones. “I think few would argue that it is a worthy winner.”

Dust Storm near Broken Hill ... our second place winner

Dust Storm near Broken Hill … our second place winner

The second placed photo was Dust Storm near Broken Hill. Again, many congratulations to the photographer who will receive a $150 gift voucher from wine storage and distribution company, Cellarit

“I really enjoyed the spontaneity and authenticity of this image,” said Judge Jones. “It somehow captures the surprises and dramas of a Big Lap adventure …  and that makes it a deserved runner-up.”

Our Third Place entry

Dirt in the Mist … our third place winner

Narrowly beaten into third place was Dirt in Mist. The photographer will win a selection of grey nomad bumper stickers and stubby holders.

“A simple but effective image that is dripping with atmosphere,” said Judge Jones. “The presence of the dirt is subtle and far from overpowering … yet it defines the shot, and makes it what it is.”

A huge thank you to our ever diligent judge for his efforts, to our wonderful sponsors, and to all of you who took the time and trouble to enter, to view and to vote. We are looking forward to our next photo competition already…

Congrats to Peter and Margaret a great shot, once again the second and third prize has gone to members that have only ever posted once in the forum and that was in the photo comp, IMHO there should be more rules for this comp.

I do understand that the forum is open to everybody, it was one of my reasons for not entering this time around, the other reason was that I have been unwell for a while.
I would like to see some restrictions on who can enter, it will be hard to keep a track of but I don’t think it’s fair for members of other sites to just enter GN comps and walk away with prizes.
Of the 10 finalist only two were not regular poster’s and guess what.
Having said that I do believe Steve had a hard job to do picking the top ten, thanks Steve for a job well done, and thanks to Cindy for her work in another GN comp.
