Kempsey considers plan for showground camping

Published: July 24, 2013

The New South Wales riverside town of Kempsey is looking at the possibility of expanding its showground to become a recreational vehicle (RV) destination.

Those behind the initiative say grey nomads would be a key target group if, and when the plan becomes a reality. There is no word yet on what the possible fees would be.

“I’m hoping we can get access to the vacant block next to the showground (on Sea St), which is currently a crown reserve,” showground manager Steve Rowe told the Macleay Argus newspaper. “Our location halfway between Brisbane and Sydney is perfect and we could accommodate up to 20 RVs.”

The showground presented its plans to council earlier this week.

The Pacific Highway now bypasses Kempsey and the local authority has been considering its options to ensure visitors keep arriving.

“With the bypass open and a need to attract people from out of town, by making the showground a world-class venue, it can bring money into the Macleay,” he said. “It would help us attract large events, like equine events, and cater to the everyday grey nomads.”

Mr Rowe told the Macleay Argus that he hoped by widening the client base further and exploiting the facilities at the venue, the showground would increase its income and no longer be reliant on grant funding for improvements and maintenance.

Have you stayed in the Kempsey areas before? Would the showgrousd option encourage you to detour off the ‘new’ highway for a look?

Definitely would stop in Kempsey if a facility like this was implemented. We stayed two weeks in Kenilworth’s show-grounds over the 2012-2013 Christmas/New Year period, but wouldn’t have known about this beautiful place near the Sunshine Coast if it hadn’t been for the ability to stay there. Hope Kempsey’s authorities have the foresight to do the same…
