Easter is one of the busiest camping periods of the year … and a time when grey nomads share their favourite camping spots with the ‘masses’.
For example, more than 4000 people are expected to camp on Queensland’s Fraser Island, during the next few weeks. And the Fraser Coast Chronicle newspaper reports that mainland caravan parks in Hervey Bay are also ‘sharing the love’ from tourists.
“Bookings for Fraser and Cooloola are heavy over Easter with most campgrounds close to full,” a Queensland Parks and Wildlife representative said.
Australiana and Fraser Coast Top Tourist Park owner Sharon Frankel told the Chronicle that caravan and tents sites, rather than cabins, had proved more popular this season than in previous years.
The four caravan parks owned by Fraser Coast Regional Council are also busy.
But it’s not just in Queensland. Towns across the country are making preparations for the holiday hordes. In Esperance in Western Australia, for example, overflow campgrounds at the Greater Sports Ground have just opened to accommodate campers who cannot find a camping site within one of the town’s registered camping grounds.
This area will be open until sites become available again in local caravan parks.
At the same time, the Shire of Esperance says it is ready to tackle illegal camping in and around Esperance town centre.
Shire rangers will conduct patrols over the holiday period and issue infringement notices to those in breach of caravan and camping regulations.
“There is no better place to explore the great outdoors than Esperance, and camping is one of the best ways to do that,” Shire president, Malcolm Heasman, told the Esperance Express. “But free camping in the centre of town is not only unsightly, it is illegal, and we are taking action to prevent it.”
