Grey nomads gearing up for the ultimate Outback golfing experience

Published: May 4, 2023

Across the country, grey nomad golf enthusiasts are practising their swing and their putting action as the date for the Outback Queensland Masters draws ever closer.

This one-of-a-kind golfing adventure takes place from June 17 to July 23, spanning over 2,000 kilometres across Outback Queensland.

Open to amateur, social and first-time golfers, the event will be staged in six unique locations from St George, the gateway to the Outback, through to the rich red soils of Cunnamulla and Quilpie, before venturing north to Richmond and Karumba and onto Mount Isa for the Million-Dollar Hole-In-One.

The first five events span a weekend, with nine holes on Saturday and nine holes on Sunday.

On the Saturday evening, there will be a dinner under the stars of the Milky Way with live entertainment from some of Australia’s finest.

The first five locations include a designated $10,000 hole-in-one, open to all players. The tournament culminates in Mount Isa for a three-day event over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday … with a Million-Dollar Hole-In-One competition on the Sunday.

To compete in the Million-Dollar Hole-In-One, players must first have competed in two previous locations. Throughout the journey free advice and tips are provided from PGA Professional, Darren Weatherall on how to improve your game and hit a hole-in-one.

Non-players are welcome to come along to watch and join in on the country hospitality and live entertainment at each location. Dogs are also welcome.

Liz Cockram from Warwick in Queensland is one of those who has previously had a crack at the challenging Outback courses as part of the tourmament … and she has this advice for those thinking about giving it a try.

“If you are contemplating joining the Outback Queensland Masters, do it … it is one of the most
memorable experiences my husband and I have had,” she said. “The friends you make along the way is amazing, the golf an experience you won’t get on the greens, so, so much fun from start to finish – have a go, you won’t regret it.”

I haven’t played, but have been a spectator. It’s a really nice laid back event, met some great people and I can highly recommend the Dinner Under the Stars.
