In the balance! Council to vote on fate of two beachside caravan parks

Published: February 26, 2025

The fate of two decades-old beachside caravan parks in Queensland’s Hervey Bay will go some way towards being decided tonight.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council will be meeting to vote on the future of the much-loved Pialba and Torquay caravan parks.

Work was paused on $22million worth of revamps at the two parks in October in favour of a consultation process where councillors and the community were asked to look at any new possibilities.

According to the recommendations of a report to be tabled at tonight’s meeting, the Pialba Caravan Park renovations should go ahead, but things are a lot less certain for the Torquay park.

The report recommends the council resume the redevelopment of the Pialba Caravan Park utilising the current park design.

However, it suggests the council undertake community consultation to seek community feedback on alternative options for the Torquay Caravan Park.

Among the two of the alternate uses for the Torquay caravan park site are:

    • Natural open space with basic playground facilities, as well as open space facilities such as shelters, seats, drinking fountains and interconnected pathways. There would be an enhanced esplanade path to cater for pedestrians and cyclists, but no provision for additional toilet and convenience facilities.

  • The second option is for a premium playground and recreational hub. This would include a premium playground, open space facilities such as shelters, seats, drinking fountains and interconnected pathways. There would be an enhanced esplanade path to cater for pedestrians and cyclists. There would also be new toilet and convenience facilities built, and community building space for water sports clubs and eco/nature based tourism related activities.

The report to council recommends it engages a consultant to develop layout plans, artistic sketches and cost breakdowns for the two alternative options suitable for community consultation.

And it then undertakes community consultation on the three options for Torquay Caravan Park … Natural Open Space; Premium Playground and Recreational Hub; or a redevelopment.

The council report says that, although Torquay Caravan Park is nearing end of life, its infrastructure is in better condition than that of Pialba so there is not the same need to make a speedy final decision on its potential redevelopment.

The spin offs of the caravan parks being available are.
Revenue for the council plus jobs
that goes with them.
Revenue for Bowling Clubs and other
recreational sports especially
over the autumn and winter months.
Plus jobs
Revenue for all of our business in
Hervey Bay , Marybourgh and region.
Plus jobs and tourism.
The council has to represent us, the
owners of this land and what we
want not them. This parks are
affordable to families and retirees
etc.
