Australia’s best beaches named … with one surprise inland inclusion amongst them

Published: March 2, 2026

Tourism Australia has named its Best Australian Beaches for 2026 and one inclusion will jump out at many grey nomads … the NT’s Ellery Creek Big Hole!

This spot in the West MacDonnell Ranges, famed for its icy cold waters surrounded by rugged cliffs, is literally about as far away from the coast as you can get in this country. In a land ringed by golden sands and surging surf, it will be refreshing to many to see less traditional beaches getting a nod of approval and recognition from tourism authorities.

Having said that, Ellery Creek Big Hole did come in at number 10 on a list of 10, which was topped by NSW’s Bate Bay Beaches, followed by WA’s Pinky Beach, and Queensland’s Beachcomber Cove.

The winners were chosen by veteran beach expert and Tourism Australia Beach Ambassador, Brad Farmer.

“This year’s list is a celebration of the quiet, soulful spots that define our coastal identity and offer a true escape for those willing to wander a little further,” he said. “Whether it’s the remote allure of Beachcomber Cove or Hellfire Bay, these beaches offer a ‘slow travel’ experience … they are places where you can still hear the wind and the waves rather than the crowds, providing a deep, authentic connection to the land and sea, with many First Nations stories.”

Tourism Australia Managing Director, Robin Mack, emphasised the importance of the list in driving regional tourism and showcasing the breadth of Australia’s natural beauty.

“This year’s study brilliantly showcases the incredible diversity of our coastline and beaches,” he said. “From the stunning sands of Bate Bay in NSW and Pinky Beach in WA to the iconic backdrop of The Nut in Tasmania and Ellery Creek Big Hole in the NT, these locations encourage both Australians and international visitors to explore more of Australia beyond the traditional hotspots.”

‘TOP 10’ AUSTRALIAN BEACHES FOR 2026:

1. Bate Bay Beaches – NSW
2. Pinky Beach – WA
3. Beachcomber Cove – QLD
4. Tallow Beach – NSW
5. Hellfire Bay – WA
6. Godfreys Beach, The Nut – TAS
7. Inskip Point – QLD
8. Mount Martha – VIC
9. Smoky Bay – SA
10. Ellery Creek Big Hole – NT

Interestingly, for many grey nomads, the coastal routes are becoming a less and less important part of their overall trips with many saying more congested roads, busier attractions, and higher-priced van parks are persuading them to spend the majority of their time in inland areas.

But with such stunning beaches all around the edges of the country, it’s hard for travellers to say they’ve truly done the Big Lap unless they’ve also experienced a good part of our incredible coastline.
