The fuel crisis sparked by the conflict in the Middle East is giving some grey nomads serious flashbacks to the tough times endured back in the early days of the Covid pandemic.
Certainly, veteran travellers Guy and Sandra Williams are remaining cautious, and putting their next adventure on hold until the situation settles down.
“If you are not careful, you could get stuck at your destination, and be unable to get back if fuel rationing comes in,” said Guy. “Just like when they closed the borders when Covid came in.”
The couple actually arrived back home just before the pandemic threw so many Big Lap dreams into chaos … but they know others who weren’t quite so lucky.
Guy and Sandra travel in their 2019 Endeavour.

Guy is still hoping to travel later this year.
“They said it was hell trying to get back, driving night and day with husband and wife sharing stints behind the wheel, with no care from the authorities of their safety with them needing rest stops,” he said. “We will be staying home if this Middle East situation keeps up … it’s not worth the stress.”
Guy and Sandra now travel in a 2019 Endeavour 17’6 single-axle caravan.
Last winter, they went up to Cape Leveque in WA’s Kimberley region, and they had been planning to go to Bowen in Queensland for three months this year … but this is now on hold ‘until this mess is cleared up’.
“We do not book ahead due to the risk of this sort of thing,” said Guy. “We like the freedom of travelling in this great country of ours and choosing where to go, and being able to stay if we like the place.”
