While hard-core Big Lap traditionalists may mourn their slow demise, the fact is that those ‘basic’ – and slightly intimidating – drop dunnies are slowly going the way of the dodo.
New toilet technology and ongoing investment is gradually seeing facilities at campsites, picnic areas, and rest stops given a serious update.
A case in point is the Dora Point Campground in Tasmania’s Humbug Point Nature Recreation Area, where the amenities have been updated to deliver ‘modern, accessible features’.
A key feature of the project is the careful preservation of the original stone walls. These date back to the late 1970s and have been incorporated into the new design, allowing the site to preserve building character while benefiting from contemporary improvements.
The work costed an estimated $342,000, and is part of a broader North East Parks and Reserves Upgrades program, which aims to enhance infrastructure across the region while preserving the unique qualities of its outdoor spaces.
