The Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers has just got underway … and broken a world record!
A whopping 1,564 people dressed as Toowoomba Violets gathered at the Queenlsnd town’s Queens Park today, turning the Garden City into a spectacular sea of purple.
The sea of purple brought together school children, families, locals, visitors, community groups and Toowoomba Regional Council representatives, all celebrating the flower that has been part of the city’s identity for almost a century.
The previous record stood at 938 people dressed as sunflowers in Malta.
Today, Toowoomba surpassed that number while paying tribute to its official floral emblem.

Toowoomba Regional Council Tourism portfolio spokesperson Cr James O’Shea said the achievement was a proud moment for the city.
“Today is a fantastic moment for Toowoomba. To see 1,546 people come together, dressed as our very own Toowoomba Violet, is something the whole community can be incredibly proud of,” Cr O’Shea said. “The Toowoomba Violet has such a special place in our city’s history, so it’s fitting that we’ve celebrated it by bringing our community together and making a little history of our own.”
The Toowoomba Violet has a special place in the city’s history. The Sweet Violet, Viola odorata, became known as the Toowoomba Violet after local mothers and families sold bunches of the flowers following World War I to help raise funds for the Mothers’ Memorial, honouring their fallen sons. It was formally declared Toowoomba’s floral emblem in 1932.
The 2026 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, which runs from today until October 5 is very much a favourite with grey nomads. It features more than 80 events and experiences across the Garden City, including the Grand Central Floral Parade tomorrow, and FEASTival from September 26-27.
