After years of delays, mistakes, and cost over-runs, the news larger Spirit of Tasmania vessels have begun taking passengers across the Bass Strait.
The simultaneous departures of Spirit of Tasmania IV from Geelong, and Spirit of Tasmania V from Devonport, signal the beginning of a new era for Tasmania’s vital sea link.
The new ships can carry an additional 470 passengers per sailing and feature 301 cabins, including family, deluxe, accessible and pet-friendly accommodation options, alongside significantly increased vehicle and freight capacity.
Tasmanian Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, said the new vessels were about building an even better Tasmania.

“We have now entered a new era for Bass Strait travel,” he said. “This is an intergenerational investment that will serve Tasmanians for decades to come.”
The state government said the new vessels would strengthen Tasmania’s connection to mainland Australia, while supporting future growth in trade, regional economies … and tourism.
Sarah Clark, Chief Executive Officer, Tourism Tasmania, said that, for many travellers, the journey to Tasmania began the moment they boarded the Spirit.
”These new vessels create an experience that reflects the quality, character and hospitality visitors can expect when they arrive on the island,” he said. “The increased capacity will help support tourism growth across the state, encouraging more visitors to bring their vehicles, stay longer and explore more of Tasmania’s regions and communities.”
