Moves are afoot to improve facilities at a scenic lake in the inland New South Wales town of Narrabri in a bid to attract more grey nomads.
Local resident Ron Campey has launched a campaign to further enhance Yarrie Lake, which is one of the district’s biggest recreational and tourist assets.
“The potential for Yarrie Lake to be developed for camping and grey nomad visits is huge,” he told the Courier newspaper. “It could become the number one regional destination for grey nomads on the way north … it’s a bird watcher’s paradise.”
Apart from the development of improved on-shore facilities, such as more campsites and other facilities, Ron said he and others were keen to see development of the lake itself.
“If it could be deepened, the spoil could perhaps be used to build an island in the middle of the lake which would mitigate the wash from boats,” he told the Courier. “And it could be a venue in itself, with barbecue facilities.”
The Yarrie Lake Trust, which oversees management of the lake, said it had not yet received any approaches for work at the lake. The Trust’s team of volunteers has been responsible for significant improvements at the lake over the years, and in securing a number of funding grants.
As well as grey nomads, the 200-acre lake is also popular with water skiers.
We have never stayed there but am sure it is a wonderful spot if we are passing will call in.
Re your charges, My 5th wheeler is fully self contained, if I do use a powered site, & other amenities I will not pay over $20-00 a night, I have tested our power usage and only uses
$ 4-00 a 24hr day, as everything is 12volt & solar & gas .
I feel as a grey Nomad we should not pay for jumping castles etc
Charges should be accordingly to what people arrive with.
The point of the matter is if we don,t stay because the price is to high we don,t spend locally we move on. We don,t carry excess food we purchase where we are happy with ,sometimes it is a little dearer than supermarkets 100ks away but we understand what it cost to get there.,also it cost us extra fuel to get it there so you don,t save anything.
Finally the local traders need to make a living.
Animals are a must.
You are better of with 50 nomads than only 1 caravan in for the night,also we nomads travel all over the country and we pass the word along of where is a good place to stay and where not to stay.

Our limit is $25 and your right we don’t need the jumping castles and play grounds and everything else . We are also very self contained. I understand caravan parks need to make a living but so does the town. Bring in the grey nomads and travelling people at a fair price for their caravan, camper or tent and everyone wins. We grey nomads sometimes feel ripped off by some caravan parks that offer nothing but a bit of ground no shade no pool, poor TV reception and then charged way to much. Wake up town people everywhere we have money to spend but don’t let your leaders send us a way. Free camps or small fees will keep your towns alive.
We have not stayed but we would
We tried to book in to about 4 C.Parks on the beach around Brunswick Heads Kingscliff region. We were after a week or maybe 2 weeks site. Only to be told booked out. The other main reason was that they could accommodate us from Mon to Thurs, but the week ends were all booked out, as they get a lot of people booking weekend sites from the city.
And they wonder why we prefer to bush camp. But not to many bush camps in the Brunswick Head /Kingscliff region.
We really prefer bush camps. and support the places that make us welcome.
