Grey nomads hit the road to ‘live Australia’s story’

With the drought continuing to bite hard in Queensland’s western regions, the state government has announced a new $500,000 tourism campaign to entice more grey nomads and other visitors to the outback.

The new tourism slogan is ‘Live Australia’s Story’ which is designed to help portray the region’s heritage, landscape and characters. The campaign will span print, radio and social media advertisements.

“The State Government is putting in half a million dollars to get people out of the cities and out here into the Outback,” said Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. “This is vital for your communities and it is vital for growing tourism, and honestly where else would you rather be?”

Tourism operator Alan Smith told the ABC the announcement gave him a lot of confidence.

“This new brand, ‘Live Australia’s Story’, is the best slogan I have ever heard for the Outback,” he said. “Because it fits just about any application we want to put it on – whether it is cultural, geological, historical, pioneer, Indigenous, it is fantastic.”

* Do you think ‘Live Australia’s story’ is a good tourism slogan? Does it make you want to do just that?

Does this mean that Paul Syvret may have been wrong with his story?

We spent a while in the Queenslqnd outback last year, and it was wonderful. Lovely places, lovelier people. Knowing that, I think the slogan is a little weak. There are marvellous things going on in these outback towns, that are historical in nature, but the slogan doesn’t capture that reality strongly enough. We’ll go there anyway, but the slogan wouldn’t attract us if we were new to the region.
