Another nasty accident in a remote national park has once again highlighted the need for travellers to take extreme caution when out exploring or bushwalking.
A 19-year-old German tourist had to be rescued after falling five metres down a rocky gorge in Western Australia’s Karijini National Park. She had been climbing down rocks to access a walking trail between Fortescue Falls and Circular Pool in Dales Gorge when she slipped and fell. She has been flown to Perth for treatment for back and head injuries.
Just last month, another overseas tourist was hurt after falling in Joffre Gorge, also in Karijini. The Taiwanese woman broke her collarbone and sustained spinal injuries.
While the numbers of visitors in these remote national parks continues to climb, grey nomads and other travellers are being warned not to let the crowds disguise the fact that they remain potentially perilous wilderness areas … and that the odd bit of fencing and signage does not make them safe.

No more fencing, we are a nanny state already. People cannot be saved from their own stupidity, put a fence there and they will probably climb over it to get where they want to go.
can’t prevent stupidity. .fencing wont stop them. own risk signage in all languages or pictures don’t stop them either. we see it al the time. risk takers have no fear.

I’m inclined to agree with Charley, and let’s just hope that our older age than this unfortunate young woman has led us to be more cautious.
Agree with Charley. One of the great things we enjoyed about WA was the lack of fences, railings, blocked off areas and other “protect you from yourself” paraphernalia found in the eastern states. In wilderness areas people must be prepared to take responsibility for their own actions.
