A bushwalker has been killed by a falling tree branch in the Gold Coast hinterland.
The 35-year-old woman suffered head injuries when the branch fell on her while she was hiking along a track near the Binna Burra Lodge in Lamington National Park.
Paramedics arrived to find the bushwalker still trapped under the branches. She had suffered life-threatening injuries and was unable to be resuscitated by bystanders.
“It’s a massive tree, it’d be probably about three metres wide,” said Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman, Darrin Hatchman. “It has just broken about 20 metres up and has just fallen straight upon these bushwalkers with next to no warning, unfortunately.”
He said the incident took place about two kilometres along the “well-maintained” track, believed to be the popular Caves Circuit.
The woman’s walking companion was uninjured. A Binna Burra Lodge spokeswoman confirmed the woman had been staying at the lodge, believed to be with her husband.
“This is just a tragic freak accident resulting in the loss of life,” said Mr Hatchman.
