Another day ... another list!
Every grey nomad is after different things as they traverse this amazing country, and a camping spot that is magical for one traveller may be seen as ‘not my cup of tea’ by another.
It’s what makes compiling a list of the ‘best’ camping spots such a challenging – if not impossible – task. But that doesn’t seem to stop people from trying. The latest organisation to have a crack is the APN media group, which reckons the following are the top five camping spots in Queensland. What do you think?
- Carnarvon Gorge. This old favourite between Roma and Emerald gets the nod because of its towering white sandstone cliffs, its variety of plant, animal and bird species, and the camping.
- Eurimbula National Park. Its proximity to the beautiful towns of Agnes Water and 1770 earn this one brownie points. And, of course, its superb walking tracks and sensational lookout spots.
- Notch Point. The free beachfront camping at this cracker, 12 kilometres from Ilbilbie, south of Sarina, is the big draw here. APN says: “It’s got everything, 4WD, fishing and camping.” There’s a 24-hour maximum stay, though.
- Kroombit Tops National Park. East of Biloela, APN describes this park as “visually breathtaking” and a “gem” with two great camping spots.
- Lake Somerset / Somerset Dam. Okay, this one may have been included to appeal to the family market … but maybe not. The Lake Somerset Holiday Park is described as “45 hectares of lakeside beauty on the northern shores of Somerset Dam”. The lake itself is said to a true playground for young and old with swimming, fishing and boating.
