Travellers allegedly raped at remote SA campsite

Published: February 10, 2016

The alleged abduction and rape of two young foreign backpackers at a remote campsite has shocked the travelling community.

The incident happened at Salt Creek in the Coorong National Park south east of Adelaide. The women, in their early 20s, were apparently attacked by “a newly acquainted person”.

One of the women managed to escape naked and bleeding, and was spotted by four fishermen who raised the alarm.

A 59-year-old man was later arrested on the sand dunes and has since faced Adelaide Magistrates Court via a video link from Murray Bridge. He is charged with abduction and attempted murder.

The victims were flown to the Flinders Medical Centre with serious injuries and remain in hospital in a stable condition. Police will not reveal the backpackers’ injuries but 7 News is reporting that at least one had been tied up.
