Battery blamed for caravan blaze

Published: March 1, 2012

Clothes left lying on the wires of a battery are the suspected cause of a fire that destroyed a campervan recently.

Sergeant David Cooper said the fire in Lorrne, Victoria, was not suspicious, and said a gas lamp may have also contributed to the blaze.

“A single male was in charge of the van but wasn’t with it at the time of the fire,” he told the. Surf Coast Times. “The Country Fire Association fully extinguished the blaze.”

A member of the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee was alerted to the fire by a camper and was first on the scene. He said smoke was billowing out of the vehicle but he managed to contain the fire with an extinguisher until the authorities arrived.

It’s another salutary warning of how careful we must all continue to be as we travel … no matter how many thousands of kilometres we have clocked up.
