‘Hervey Bay’s beachfront van parks are here to stay’

Published: November 1, 2019

While Australia’s incredible beachfront caravan parks have slowly been disappearing, Hervey Bay’s parks are apparently here to stay.

Fraser Coast Regional Council has dismissed speculation that it plans to move Hervey Bay’s council-owned caravan parks on the Esplanade.

It says it is in the midst of master planning parks and was was looking at its three Hervey Bay parks and what they had to offer at their various locations with a view to upgrading facilities.

“I really struggle to imagine what Hervey Bay would be like without those beachside caravan parks,” Deputy Mayor, Councillor Darren Everard told the Fraser Coast Chronicle. “People choose to holiday in Hervey Bay because of those caravan parks … I think it would be pretty silly to even consider doing something like that.”

Cr Everard said that considering the future of the parks would take time.

“It’s early days, we’ve got to look at everything that’s in there,” he said. “We’ve got to work out what we need and how we are going to do it to make sure we get it right.”

Protection of the council’s assets was also something that was always on the agenda, Cr Everard said.

He told the Chronicle that the region had an extensive coastline and erosion plan and the council would act to protect an asset such as a caravan park in the future, whether it be through the addition of rocks or sea walls.

Part of the shoreline plan was to have a fallback position, he said.

As to whether the park upgrades would consider the growing RV market was yet to be decided, he said.

We love Hervey Bay. The ability to park our van along the foreshore is the main attraction and it makes it unique . Without that we would probably look elsewhere. Hope it stays just as laidback and peaceful as it is today.

No I don’t need the foreshore I rather be in a park that’s more protective and not so open as anyone can walk through and the salt that would get on the vans no thanks

The Hervey Bay foreshore is unique and parks should be retained for caravanners, not everyone can afford the fancy waterfront apartments… Keep them for the average holiday makers & not developers…

We mainly go to Hervey Bay every year because of these parks and their position, we obviously spend our money in the town while we are there. If the parks weren’t on the foreshore we would go somewhere else

We love Hervey Bay because of its beachfront caravan parks and laid back life style We reside in North Queensland where we have some of the best beaches but always come to Hervey Bay once a year with our van for two weeks Would not visit if the beachfront van parks were taken away
