Bedourie has 'big' plans for the camp oven
The Queensland town of Bedourie is ready to join the nation’s list of ‘big’ tourist attractions.
Many a grey nomad photo book is packed with images of everything from big bananas and big pineapples to big prawns and big gum boots. But it could soon be time to update the album with a trip to the ‘big camp oven’.
The Bedourie camp oven was reportedly developed in the 1920s when locals found cast iron camp ovens were easily damaged … and now the invention may be immortalised in a whopper of a way.
“The plan is to construct a giant camp oven of steel, a replica of the current design of camp oven on the northern approach to Bedourie, on the left-hand side of the road,” Diamantina Council CEO Scott Mason he told the ABC. “Size we are not sure at this stage, but probably around the vicinity of a diameter of 30 to 40 metres, set on a side profile to give it a real magnitude when it is viewed by travellers.”
Whoa! That’s big all right.
Mr Mason says Bedourie locals are passionate about the camp oven’s history which shows the pioneering wisdom or ingenuity of bush people.
