A popular Victorian caravan park which copped a drenching duringthe Loddon River flood of January 2011 is to be given a $4.2 million upgrade. Many of the facilities at the Bridgewater Caravan Park, north-west Bendigo, were ruined in the floods but Loddon Shire council has just given the green light to the revamp proposal.
Planned works include the construction of ensuite units and cabins, a camp kitchen, a swimming pool and a playground. Loddon Shire council chief executive officer John McLinden said the rejuvenated van park would draw more people to Bridgewater’s riverside setting, which is already highly popular with waterskiers and boating enthusiasts.
“It creates a great tourist park, which is great for the economy as it increases the population of Bridgewater over summer,” he said. “Plus, Bridgewater residents will also have a redeveloped public area over the foreshore.”
The council received four objections to the plan, with concerns there would be insufficient access to the park and boat ramp facilities and that no public amenities or public toilets were planned in the redevelopment.
Back in 2011, the Loddon peaked at eight metres in Bridgewater, that was a full 2.5 metres above the major flood warning level. As well as the van oark dozens of homes, the post office and even the police station went under.
