Cyclist badly injured after being hit by car towing a caravan

Published: February 23, 2022

A cyclist has been rushed to hospital this afternoon after being struck by a car towing a caravan on the Pacific Highway north of Newcastle in New South Wales.

The Newcastle Weekly reports that numerous police officers and NSW Ambulance paramedics converged on the scene following reports of a serious motor vehicle accident near the North Arm Cove exit.

It is believed a man in his 50s was hit while riding his bicycle on the motorway.

While police controlled the heavy flow of traffic, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service’s medical crew and paramedics treated the male for a serious head injury.

He was then airlifted to John Hunter Hospital.

No further details about the caravanner are available at this time.

I have been hit once by a caravan, and once by the Clear View mirrors, of a 4wd, whilst bicycletouring in QLD. The 4wd didn’t stop, well not immediately, apparently he stopped 3 quarters of km away, to readjust his mirror, and the van, hit my dog trailer, and then my body, and he blamed me, although he was heavily fined for it. Both times I ended up in hospital, and my dog at the vets. The caravan driver did not give me any clearance, and just ran over me. So I cannot really use the roads between the NSW/QLD border up to Longreach, as all caravaner’s and 4wder’s don’.t believe we are entitled to be, or should be allowed on the road.

I’m glad your ok after you’re incident’s. I understand you didn’t directly blame the driver but I just wanted to say that I following directly behind the caravan and was first to assist the rider and I can assure you that it was in no way the drivers fault. The rider crossed the highway and the driver to evasive action which actually stopped the rider from almost certain death.

“while riding his bicycle on the motorway” are bicycles even allowed on motorways?
