Birdsville visitor numbers have ‘just gone ballistic’

Published: July 29, 2013

The number of grey nomads and other travellers visiting Birdsville is surging … with no sign of a drop off any time soon.

According to the Birdsville Hotel assistant manager Steve Kinney, the famed Outback town in Queensland’s far south-west has been busier than normal ever since the June school holidays.

“It was a bit slow during April and May but since then it’s just gone ballistic,” he told the ABC. “Tourist numbers are very good … there’s certainly a lot of people around, so it’s great to see.”

He says the hotel is catering for up to 300 diners a night.

“A lot of people are going across the desert, both ways, and a lot of people are just doing the loop around Innamincka,” he said.  “Some are going up the coast and across to Mount Isa and back down through Boulia and Bedourie.”

Mr Kinney said other travellers were coming up the track from Adelaide and heading across to Longreach.

Maybe it’s also has to do with the fact that there is a croc here. Didn’t believe the signs up at first but we have actually seen him sunning himself
on the bank. There is a meeting in town tonight to discuss what they are going to do about him. Hopefully relocate him back to where he came from. How he got here is the talk of the town at the moment.

The croc got lucky. The Birdsville bakery does a fabulous camel pie!
