Campervans destroyed in early morning fire at Queensland rest area

Published: June 18, 2025

A number of campervans, cars, and tents have been destroyed after fire swept through a rest area in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast early this morning.

Police say they were called to reports of a man allegedly setting fire to camping equipment at the Jowarra Park rest area on Steve Irwin Way in Glenview

In a media release, police say a man was taken into custody a short time later without incident.

A crime scene has been declared and investigations continue. No charges have been laid at time of writing.

Fire crews confirmed no one was inside the burning vehicles, but a few crews remain as a precaution.

More than 11 QFD vehicles had initially rushed to the scene to bring the fire under control.

The Courier Mail newspaper reports that the rest area had become a place for the homeless due the lack of affordable housing in the region.
