Car towing caravan bursts into flames on country road

Published: December 22, 2022

A caravanning family had a very lucky escape after their tow car caught fire on a country road on the New South Wales South Coast.

The tow vehicle was pretty much destroyed but, fortunately, it is understood no one was injured. The incident happened yesterday morning on Moss Vale Road, south of Cambewarra Lookout Road, near Nowra.

Writing on social media, eyewitness Melissa Dale said she saw the car on fire and came across the family stranded by the side of the road who told her what had happened.

“The car started smoking, they pulled over, checked under the bonnet and saw fire … got the whole family out of the car and called for help,” she said. “The help didn’t arrive for about 45 minutes after we had got there … we were all told it was going to blow and to stay back.”

Ms Dale said the family was on its way home from a holiday in Ulladulla and thought they would take the scenic route back home to Sydney.

“Luckily nobody was hurt and they are fully insured, but still so sad for them,” she said. “Seemed like such a nice family … it’s a shame this had to happen on their last day of their holiday.”

Moss Vale Road was closed for quite some time until the fire was extinguished and the car and caravan were cleared from the road.
