Roam with a home … RV village popularity booms

Published: March 5, 2017

With increasing numbers of grey nomads hitting the open road, there has been an explosion in the popularity of residential complexes largely devoted to catering to the needs of the over-50s who spend a lot of time travelling in their caravans and motorhomes.

One of the early pacesetters in this burgeoning industry was RV Homebase at Maryborough, and now that company is aiming to replicate its success there with a similar set-up at Bli Bli on the Sunshine Coast.

The RV park and residential allotments are proposed for a site on Yandina-Bli Bli Rd, opposite the Parklakes Drive roundabout.

“We’re pretty proud of what we’ve accomplished up in Maryborough and we’re looking at doing the same thing here,” RV Homebase general manager, Sam Williams, told the Sunshine Coast Daily.

The developers’ vision is for an RV homebase park comprising permanent homes, each with a garage capable of housing an RV.

The land has been included in the urban footprint in the draft amendments to the South-East Queensland Regional Plan, but a formal application is yet to be made to the Sunshine Coast Council.

Bli Bli is a booming area, which seems particularly attractive to the older demographic.  The Sunshine Coast Daily reports that other developments currently under way in the area include the Halcyon Lakeside over-50s village, which will comprise 231 homes when completed, and follows the success of Halcyon Landing, a 171-home over 50s development.

Many grey nomads are attracted to these sorts of development because it allows them to buy an affordable, low-maintenance home base from which to travel while offering space for their caravans or motorhomes, and in a development which is generally populated by like-minded people.

  • Do you like the idea of living – at least some of the time – in one of these purpose-designed complexes? If you could pick anywhere in the country, where would you make your ‘home base? Comment below.’

Hi Cheryl
We have always been interested in the Maryborough concept and admire what has been created there, but also hoped that one day someone would replicate a development on the Sunshine Coast. Very interested to read of your intentions and would love to learn more.

Yesss! I saw this idea on tv a few months back and thought it would be great. Awesome idea and I’m sure once this one takes off they’ll start popping up all over the country. Hervey Bay would be a great locale!

Have admired the Maryborough RV Homebase and would love to see one on the Sunshine Coast. Has there been any progress with this? I would be interested if there is. Any chance of being kept up to date?

We went to see the one on Maryborough, love the idea, and would consider moving from SA if there was one on Sunshine coast or Harvey Bay. McLaren Vale SA would be an awesome spot. Wine area and close to the beaches.
