After seeing its newly upgrades campsite booking system crash on its first day and then taking it offline for several weeks, Parks Victoria has relaunched … with a few significant tweaks in place.
Booking for some dates and sites have already re-opened and more will open progressively over the coming weeks, depending on location and booking dates.
Parks Victoria thanked would-be users for their patience while it had worked to get the booking system back up and running, and then outlined the new features it had implemented ‘to manage very high numbers of people to the site’.
Bookings of sites will typically open at 11am on any given day, but now a ‘pre-queue’ will open at 10.25am.

“If you visit the booking site before 11am, you will be placed in the pre-queue and randomly selected to enter the online booking system from 11am (when bookings open),” it says on its website. “This helps to manage the number of people in the booking system when bookings open whilst keeping it fair and equitable by random selection. People who visit the site after 11am join the end of the queue. So, it’s best to join the ‘pre-queue’.”
Parks Victoria says the system will be monitored in real time to maximise the number of people in the booking system without compromising system performance.
“We have worked to our best effort to predict the likely demand on the booking opening days and optimised the system to allow for as many people as possible,” it said. “We have also implemented monitoring that allows us to manage the number of users.”
However, it did caution that – depending on the number of people in the ‘pre-queue’ – there may be a delay in being admitted into the booking system.
“This is normal so the booking system can operate efficiently,” Parks Victoria said. “Please be patient, we will do everything possible to minimise wait times in the queue.”
The upgraded system was initially launched on July 4, but immediately had issues.

I am reminded of a John Singleton book called RipVan Australia I read in 1975.in which the forward read: “everything the Government touches turns to shit” seems like nothing has changed in 48 years.
I wonder how this compares with other States?
What’s this only opening at 11 am? Is it monitored by staff? Why? Do they expect it to crash that often?
The WA park booking system is open 24/7/365 – and we are called the Wait Awhile state!
Absolutely RIDICULOUS process. BEWARE – double digit IQ bureaucrats at work 🙂
