‘We ticked off some things on our Big Lap bucket list!’

Published: May 22, 2017

Like most grey nomads, Tony and Tanya G had a very clear idea of what they wanted to do and see when they took off on their three-month caravanning adventure. And, like most grey nomads, they achieved some of their goals… and were happy enough to leave some for next time.

After leaving Brisbane, the pair travelled down to Tumut, free camped most of the way along the Murray to Renmark in South Australia, before heading over to the Eyre Peninsula and following all the peninsulas and Gulfs through to Adelaide.

They were then enjoying the wonders of the Great Ocean Road, when the carefully planned trip hit its first ‘speed bump’. They reached Apollo Bay and were headed to the hills to find a free camp when they discovered a broken spring hanger u-bolt.

“We crawled to a safe place at 5km/h and contacted RACQ which organised a tilt tray large enough for our 19’ van,” said Tony. “Eventually, after six hours in which they located us and transporting the van to Colac, the hanger was fixed for $65 and we were on our way again.”

The couple says that, apart from this minor mishap which ‘can happen to anyone’, all went smoothly and they were very happy to tick a few achievable targets off their Big Lap bucket list.

They say they set out with four fishy things to achieve:

a) Rake for sand crabs at a few of South Australian beaches … ACHIEVED
b) Collect some Razor Fish … ACHIEVED
c) Catch a Squid … YET TO BE DONE
d) Catch a King George Whiting … YET TO BE DONE

“Sadly we are now heading north to home after our three-month sojourn with the unfinished bucket list achievements to be completed at another time,” said Tony. “This is the beauty of having dreams, and that is a good reason to travel and complete your retirement wishes … may the dreams never stop, the glass is always half full!”
