Budget boost for Bruce

Published: September 13, 2012

The Queensland Government has allocated new money to improve the outback road network in its first budget. About $100 million will be spent on upgrading the Landsborough Highway, $30 million on upgrades to the Wills Developmental Road between Julia Creek and Cloncurry and $15 million on the Kennedy Developmental Road.

And truckies say a $415 million commitment to improve the Bruce Highway in Queensland will bring the national highway network closer to being flood proof.

Roz Shaw, the vice-president of the Queensland Trucking Association, also a member of the State Government’s newly-appointed Bruce Highway crisis management group. She says a new co-ordinated approach and the funding injection announced in the State Budget is the boost regional Queensland needs.

“The public don’t realise how much a road affects economies in the cities of North Queensland – not to mention lives,” she told the ABC. “That’s why I welcome this funding for the Bruce Highway, because they’re realised that it really is important and it’s not just south-east Queensland that needs good roads.”

I agree like many others the Bruce Highway is overdue for improvements ,One that comes to mind and should have priority, The ever failing unsafe Burdekin Bridge ,spanning the Burdekin River between Home Hill and Ayr,(Not impossible) 2 Semi’s head on middle of the bridge and catching fire,,think of the cost to all ,,
