Caravan park evacuated as bushfire rages in north-west Tasmania

Published: March 4, 2024

The potential danger posed by bushfires to grey nomads and other travellers has been put in the spotlight once again after an out-of-control blaze sparked a van park evacuation in Tasmaina.

The Crayfish Creek Caravan Park  at Port Latta in the state’s north west was evacuated yesterday as a bushfire raged nearby.

Tasmania Fire Service District Officer, Dean Graue, warned it was imperative that people kept up-to-date with information to keep safe.

“The Crayfish Creek Caravan Park has been evacuated … an evacuation centre has been set up at Rocky Cape Community Hall, 19074 Bass Highway, Rocky Cape,” he said yesterday afternoon. “Due to severe wind gusts, aircraft are unable to fly until safe, but ground crews are actively working to bring the bushfire under control.”

Due to the location of the fire, police closed the Bass Highway to all traffic in both directions between Mawbanna Road and Loosemores Road and members of the public were asked to avoid the area.

The fire, which has so far burnt an estimated 60 hectares of land, was fanned by strong winds.

Pulse Tasmania reports that the Bass Highway re-opened to traffic in the early hours of this morning. However, police have reduced the speed limit to 40km/h due to reduced visibility from high levels of smoke and are asking motorists to drive to the conditions.

The currently closed Crayfish Caravan Park will be re-assessed this morning.

Around 75 firefighters and 16 vehicles responded to the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by a car crash earlier in the week.

People are encouraged to stay informed and monitor conditions locally by visiting tasalert.com and listening to ABC Radio.
