A huge bushfire has led to the evacuation of nearly 1000 campers from Stradbroke Island near Brisbane.
Police decided to take no risks as the large, slow-moving blaze threatened to switch directions with a change in weather and burn towards campgrounds.
The Australian newspaper reports that more than 900 people camping on North Stradbroke Island’s Main Beach were ordered to leave.
Queues of four-wheel-drive vehicles then waited to be loaded on to barges to return to the mainland. Apparently, residents, campers in other spots, and holidaymakers staying in the island’s townships were able to stay put, despite heavy smoke.
A lightning strike sparked the fire on Sunday.
