A woman camping who was run over by her own car while camping in a swag on Broome’s Cable Beach suffered serious injuries, but was extremely lucky they were not worse.
Libby Gross, 39, was struck by the 4WD early on Sunday morning, and was then apparently trapped for half an hour after she became twisted up in her swag which had been tied to the vehicle’s bull bar.
She had been camping on the beach with a group of people when another person decided to take the car for a drive.
Ms Gross is now in Royal Perth Hospital with a fractured pelvis and broken hip.
The woman’s sister, Pennie Gross, told the ABC that it was lucky the ropes tying the swag to the car broke off.
“My sister knows the man who took her car but doesn’t believe he had any intent to hurt her,†Ms Gross said. “It was just a silly mistake.”
The man, 56, is assisting police with their inquiries into what happened on the beach.
Broome Shire Council ranger and emergency services manager Ty Matson told the ABC that the shire would speak to police once their investigation was completed before making any comment.
