Campers trapped by rising floodwaters in NSW park

Published: January 7, 2016

The massive rainfall that has swamped parts of New South Wales has left about 20 campers trapped by floodwaters.

The State Emergency Service (SES) has been attempting to drop supplies to the group – including five children – at a remote stretch of the Deua National Park near Moruya on the state’s south coast.

The ABC reports that crews will try to cross the river with inflatable boats in the hope of reaching the campers and delivering essential supplies such as food and water.

“We’re not trying to get them out; there’s no way we want to transport people across a flooded river,” SES incident controller, Ashley Sullivan, told the ABC. “What we want to do is make sure that they have enough food, enough water, enough fuel that they are comfortable.”

Although conditions may be improving, residents and travellers are being urged to stay away from flooded areas in the coming days, with rivers and creeks expected to carry large volumes of fast-moving water for some time yet.

The Hunter region has been particularly badly affected by the torrential rain and there have been dozens of flood rescues in recent days.
