While some Great Ocean Road towns have earned a reputation as being unfriendly to grey nomads, the movers and shakers in Victoria’s Port Fairy have been going out of their way to praise the contribution of all campers.
The town’s Business Association president Ken Brookes told the Moyne Gazette a greater influx of tourists this summer had delivered a significant economic boost.
“The streets always look busy which is great for the local economy,” Mr Brookes said. “With the art galleries, cafes and the beach, there’s so much to do here and everyone seems to be happy with the business they’ve been doing.”
Tourism officer Sharon Parker agreed that Port Fairy had enjoyed a particularly strong season.
“Every person that comes through helps the local economy,” she said.
The town is renowned for its quaint village and relaxed atmosphere, and is popular with families as well as grey nomads, many of whom return year after year.
Camper Bettine Satchel is one of them.
“It’s the kind of place that gets into your bloodstream,” she told the local newspaper. “Everybody just slows down.”
