Quick-thinking locals stop escaped campfire disaster

The danger that can be posed by campfires if they are not well attended has been graphically illustrated by a blaze at Brunswick Heads in northern New South Wales.

After the campfire escaped, the flames quickly took hold in bushland along the Brunswick River and it was only a quick response from some locals and NSW Fire & Rescue that stopped it spreading.

A witness told Echo NetDdaily website that it looked to be a well-established camp.

“Some quick-thinking locals contained fire with sand and quashed flames with branches of green leaves until the Fire Brigade arrived,” she said.

Two fire crews attended the scene at South Beach Park late on Saturday night.

“Camping equipment and were bush alight,” a NSW Fire & Rescue spokesperson told Echo NetDaily. “Crews attended and extinguished the fire within an hour of arriving.”

Police were on the scene but there were no reports of injuries or an ambulance being required.
