Candidates’ policies put grey nomads up front

Published: January 22, 2015

The issue of how to attract more grey nomads has moved even further front and centre of the Queensland election campaign.

Perhaps in a sign that their importance to rural economies is being more fully recognised, both major political parties are falling over themselves to be the friend of long-term travellers.

Just days after the Labor Party pledged $40 million to tourism, the Liberal National Party has promised $60 million over three years towards a Queensland First Tourism Fund to attract major events and draw more people to the Sunshine State.

Premier Campbell Newman also announced another $20 million towards drive tourism, to be spent upgrading rest stops on road sides and better signage.

“We have the so-called grey nomads who descended on our state, particularly in the cooler months,” Mr Newman said. “This is all about tourism.”

Earlier this week, the LNP has unveiled a $375 million plan for significant upgrades to inland highways in the hope that it would take grey nomads and others off the much-maligned Bruce Highway.

Mr Newman rejected any suggestion he was playing a game of one-upmanship with the Opposition.

“We have planned all of these initiatives for some time,” he told the ABC. “They are fully costed. Fully budgeted for.”

The Queensland election will be held on January 31.

Same old story. If we can’t afford the grey nomad style of living, ie caravanning etc, don’t do it. In Australia, generally speaking we are not too badly off. Major concern for me when caravanning is the cost of fuel.
