A car and caravan have been completely destroyed by fire in a dramatic incident on an iconic tourist route on the New South Wales mid north coast.
The Waterfall Way near the Dorrigo Mountain, west of Bellingen, was completely blocked to traffic as firefighters extinguished the flames and debris was removed from the road.
Rural Fire Service (RFS) inspector Marty Thick told the ABC that no one was injured in the drama.
The cause of the blaze has not yet been established.
Inspector Thick said the fire highlighted how important Waterfall Way was.
“There’s only one way up and one way down the Dorrigo Mountain unless you go quite a considerable distance,” he told the ABC. “You’d have to go up through Coffs Harbour and out through Ulong and the back way to Brooklana … it’s a very strategic road from the coast up to the Tablelands.”
