Holiday overseas? We’d rather camp in paradise!

Free camping in Australia

The number of people staying at caravan parks or free camping areas is surging, according to a new study from Tourism Research Australia.

The figures show that the number of nights spent in caravan parks jumped by 20%, with a near-50% increase reported for those who went off the beaten track for a spot of free camping.

And it’s not just grey nomads who are enjoying the joys of caravan parks and camping grounds … the biggest growth segments were apparently among families and adult couples.

Behind it all is a mega trend that is seeing more Australians travelling for holidays … and a bigger percentage of them spending time at home rather than travelling overseas. While the number of people holidaying overseas still rose 7% to 5.9 million in the year, that’s a significant slowdown on the doubling in numbers between 2006 and 2013.

And for those choosing to stay at home, the most popular places to holiday are New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. The report said Aussies spent nearly $60 billion on domestic overnight travel in the year to the end of September, which is up 5% on the previous 12 months.

As well as a penchant for interstate and beachside locations, travellers are also increasingly looking to experience indigenous-related activities.

The survey found the number of travellers visiting indigenous art or craft and cultural displays rose by more than 50%, with visits to indigenous sites and communities rising by more than a quarter.

My husband and I much prefer to holiday in Australia , spending our money at home. We travel about 7 months of the year , spending the winter months in the north. Love my life.
