Caravan park inundated as huge rainfall causes chaos

Published: January 29, 2016

While wild weather is lashing many parts of the country causing road closures and flash flooding, Mother Nature has been particularly cruel to Tasmania, which is only just coming to terms with two weeks of devastating bushfires.

Huge rainfall has brought further misery to both residents and travellers.

In Orford on the state’s east coast, the seaside town’s brand new caravan park has been completely inundated by floodwaters and a roof has collapsed at the supermarket in nearby Triabunna.

Glamorgan Spring Bay mayor Michael Kent told the ABC that there had been rockfalls on the highway to Hobart, which police had now closed.

“There’s probably a couple of hundred cars parked in and around Orford from caravans to business trucks, all waiting to get back to Hobart,” he said.

Water is reported to be waist deep in many properties.

A lot more rain is forecast in the coming days.
