As grey nomads are all too well aware the cost of driving has gone up significantly in recent months and years … and it is not all down to rising fuel prices.
In New South Wales at least, motorists are being offered some relief when renewing their vehicle registration. From now on, they will pay $100 less to register their privately owned vehicle, while motorcyclists will pay $80 less for their rego.
The State Government says the $100 registration discount will benefit the owners of more than 4.4 million vehicles across NSW, putting money back into the pockets of families facing ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
Around 360,000 privately owned light vehicles are due for registration renewal in September alone.

For drivers whose rego was due in July or August, the $100 discount will be applied when their registration is renewed in 2027.
However, caravans and private trailers are among those vehicles that the discount will not apply to.
It is understood that this is because the $100 discount explicitly excludes any vehicles that already receive a registration concession, discount, or rebate. Private towed caravans and camper trailers under 4.5 tonnes already receive a 40% reduction.
Eligible motorists do not need to do anything to receive the new $100 discount. It will automatically apply when an owner receives notification that their eligible vehicle is: due for registration; when a new vehicle is registered in NSW; and is re-registered in NSW after previously being unregistered.
Minister for Roads and Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison said the Government was committed to making life easier for motorists.
“We know it’s not cheap to get from A to B, which is why we’re making sure drivers, motorcyclists and commuters on public transport can save some of their hard-earned money,” she said. “Our registration discount is automatically applied, meaning there’s no homework, just savings.”
