Van thieves shatter Big Lap dreams of cancer sufferer

Published: April 3, 2018

A soon-to-be grey nomad who is suffering from terminal cancer has had his Big Lap  plans thrown into chaos after thieves stole his beloved caravan.

Danny Hancock and his wife Sue were planning to set off on their dream trip around Australia in the next few weeks … but that now looks unlikely to happen.

The 64-year old woke up on Easter Sunday to find his custom-fitted Jayco Silveline missing, with remnants of the van’s locks the only indication that it had ever been there.

“You can imagine how you feel when you’ve got the trip of a lifetime planned, and then it gets taken away from you… it’s disgraceful,” Mr
Hancock told Yahoo7 News. “It looks like a professional hit, they’ve used bolt cutters to get in… no one heard a thing.”

The couple who live in Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast had spent the past three years doing small trips down to Tasmania and South Australia practicing for ‘the big trip around the paddock’.

“Absolutely gutted that people with no honour can do this,” Ms Hancock wrote, alongside a series of photos of their caravan.

The Queensland grandfather, who is currently battling metastasised prostate cancer, told Yahoo7 News that ‘the standard-grey nomad’ trip was something he had dreamt of doing for 42 years.

“I was told I might last one year, I might last three years,” he said.

The Hancock’s were due to start their well-planned journey after the end of the Commonwealth Games later this month, meeting other friends down in South Australia.

Yahoo7 News reports that, with time against them, the couple knows that date may now be pushed way back.

Disgusting low life’s…..This makes me sick to the stomach: do hope insurance will cover them and just proves locks are only for honest people: do hope a Jayco dealer somewhere can rescue these people.

There are some absolute grubs out there who have no respect for other peoples property. I do hope that the van is found and returned in good condition and that the perpetrators are bought to justice and dealt with accordingly. It is a sad day for all vanners that these incidents continue to occur.
