With travel restrictions finally lifted in regional Victoria, it seems that grey nomads and others are seizing the opportunity to enjoy their post-lockdown freedom.

Places like Colac Colac Caravan Park, near Corryong, in north-east Victoria, say they have been inundated with booking requests … and it started as soon as news broke that regional restrictions were to be eased.

The ABC reports that the park officially re-opened late last week and guests began arriving on Friday.

The park’s operators, Paul and Mel Dally, said bookings had already exceeded those from the same time last year.

“The phone has been ringing real hard, so it has been really great,” Mr Dally told the ABC. “I think people just want to get out and about. They’ve had enough and they just want to get out and have a break.”

While there was the opportunity to briefly reopen the park when restrictions were lifted in June, the forced closure of amenities and facilities kept visitors away. However, this time around, the park is fully operational.

“All our facilities are open, all our camp kitchens and our amenities blocks are all open as well as our barbecue areas,” Mr Dally told the ABC. “We still have to make sure everyone is abiding by social distancing, but other than that everything has opened back up.”

The reopening comes after a tough year for the park and the wider region.

“It has been a long, long year between bushfires, our floods and Covid-19,” Mr Dally said. “But on the bright side, we’re through it and hopefully we can stay open now.”

  1. What is the situation for “nomaders” who have been stuck in caravan parks on the nsw-vic border for the lockdown (we were stuck in Yarrawonga for 6 & 1/2 weeks)?? Are we allowed to cross the border, seeing as we don’t have permanent home as such??

  2. TassieTourers, only within the so called ‘Bubble’. You still can’t travel out of there yet. Hold tight though I think it might be changing soon.
