Grey nomads have been caught up in a winter freeze which has gripped much of the south of Australia … and even those in the north haven’t been delivered the super sizzling temperatures promised in the brochures.
The country has been enveloped in a cold front which has sent the mercury plunging and travellers reaching for the doonas. Canberra dipped to 0.6 degrees overnight, and Perth 0.7 degrees.
“We’ve seen some strong winds, showers and some snow in the south-east, due to the cold front that came across the south-east of the country,” said Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster, Kenneth Cheunj.”Behind the cold front, we had a pretty extensive area of cold air.”
While snow and storms are causing chaos in the south, Mr Cheunj said even the Northern Territory and Queensland are being gripped by their own version of winter.
“There’s a pretty extensive cloud developing across the north of the country, that cloud may produce some patchy rain which will extend from the Kimberley across the centre of the country to some parts of Queensland,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald today. “It will get to 28 in Darwin today and 19 in Brisbane; that’s a tad below what the average temperatures for July are.”
But if you’ve had enough of the sever winter chill, just be a little more patient.
“Over the next couple of days the general trend is the weather will ease,” Mr Cheunj said. “The cold front will move from the south-east and conditions will be easing for the next few days.”

We are at Mt Isa and the temperature is 10deg brrrr. we left Darwin as it was to hot but didnt expect it to be this cold and wet. We came from NZ to get away from this weather. lol
