Grey nomads left shivering as polar blast hits south-east

Published: June 27, 2025

Grey nomads travelling in the south-east at the moment are probably either diving under the doona, or heading north earlier than planned, as they feel the impact of genuinely frigid temperatures.

Parts of inland NSW including the Central Tablelands towns of Oberon and Black Springs have already experienced temperatures low enough to bring snow coverage.

9News reports that the polar blast brought snow to some parts of Victoria, including Mount Macedon, Mount Kaye, Mount Buangor, Mount Elizabeth, Mount William and Mount Stanley.

Today, the BOM predicts lows of -1C across inland parts of NSW, , with Canberra reaching a bone-shuddering cold low of -4C.

BOM meteorologist Miriam Bradbury told news.com.au that ‘broad areas of high pressure’ were bringing exceptionally cool mornings to large parts of southern Australia.

“Morning frosts across inland Victoria once again, then partly cloudy daytime conditions particularly through the south and west,” she said.

Wangaratta is gearing up for a low of -2C, with Shepparton and Albury-Wodonga reaching similarly cold lows of -1C.

News.com.au reports that, down in Tassie, morning frosts and fogs have taken hold of the state this morning, with Launceston expecting the coldest low at 0C.

And things won’t be much better over the weekend in many areas.

“Chilly mornings will take hold into the weekend as this polar airmass slowly dissipates and high pressure brings clearer skies and lighter winds,” Weatherzone meteorologist Felix Levesque said.

While grey nomads are traditionally heatseekers, there is some evidence suggesting that a growing number are embracing the cold on their trips, perhaps in a bid to avoid the crowds.

  • How cold is it where you are today … and how are you coping with the chilly temperature? Or, are you already basking in the tropical sunshine?

We’re currently basking in tropical sunshine on the QLD coast.
We spent two weeks travelling up here via Outback NSW & QLD.
It was freezing, as cold as -1 degree in the mornings.

We had -2 inside the van in Arkaroola. Cold is a subjective matter. The coldest I had was as a child bicycle to school 16k and -18 C.
