Research offers new clues on which vehicle colours are safest

Published: May 10, 2023

The vast majority of caravan exteriors in Australia are white … and it’s pretty obvious that that it is largely to do with the fact that lighter colours deflect the warmth of the sun better … keeping occupants cooler and more comfortable.

But maybe there is a safety aspect, too. Every now and again, various motoring or insurance organisations release data indicating which coloured vehicle is statistically the safest to travel in. In the UK, carVertical research has just highlighted once again how important it can be to think about paintwork colour when choosing your vehicle.

According to the carVertical data, red is the most dangerous colour as 60% of vehicles checked on its platform have been in an accident. Brown cars at 59% come next, followed by black with 57%, then yellow with 55%, and blue with 54%.

White and grey vehicle (both 50%) seem to be the safest according to this data. Experts says that darker colours can make vehicle harder to be seen on the roads, especially at night, and they also blend more into the surroundings.

By the same logic, white is probably one of the safer colours for cars as it stands out from most surroundings, and is therefore easer to spot on the roads.

However, all experts are at pains to point out that simply driving a white car, or towing a white caravan for that matter, doesn’t make you invincible on the road.

There are several factors that can play a far more significant role in causing accidents, such as the condition of the road or vehicle … and the quality of the driving!

I suppose that’s why road markings are white or yellow. Easier to see against any background. Safe travels .

Regardless of colour scheme – travelling with lights on make all vehicles easier to see. Clearance lights on van also assist.

I wouldn’t buy any colour other than white. It is highly visible and reflects the sun best for a not so hot car in summer.
