Woman rescued from Snowy Mountains days after suffering suspected snake bite

Published: October 28, 2024

A woman who went missing in the Snowy Mountains in NSW for multiple days has been found alive but injured following a wide-scale search by emergency services.

It is being reported that 48-year-old Lovisa ‘Kiki’ Sjoberg had been bitten by a copperhead snake.

In a statement, NSW Police said the woman was located yesterday afternoon by a National Parks and Wildlife Service officer on the Nungar Creek Trail at Kiandra.

“She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for exposure and what is believed to be a snake bite, before she was taken to Cooma district hospital in a stable condition,” the police statement said.

Media reports say Ms Sjoberg had been in the elements and is believed have been bitten by a copperhead snake several days ago.

It is understood the snake’s venom is powerfully neurotoxic, haemolytic and cytotoxic, and a bite from an adult may be potentially fatal without medical assistance.

A massive search for Ms Sjoberg was launched last Monday when she was reported missing. She had last been seen driving a grey SUV in the Kosciuszko national park the previous Tuesday.

The wide-scale search involved officers attached to Monaro Police District with assistance from the Mounted Unit, Dog Unit, SES, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Rural Fire Service and a Surf Life Saving Helicopter. Members of the public also assisted.

Police said they would like to thank those involved in the multi-agency search, members of the public and the media for their assistance.
